suicide jokes and references

Post by Lisag » Fri Mar 14, 2014 6:12 pm

Hi, it's been 8 1/2 years since my mom shot herself, and every now and then one of my friends who knows how my mom died will make a suicide reference, like "the lecture was so boring I wanted to shoot my self," that kind of thing. I usually let it pass, because I know they are just using a common expression and I don't want to put them on the spot. But it's still such an awful thing to hear. How do others handle the situation?

Thanks,
Lisa G.

Lisa, I ignore them. Before my son died of suicide,I could just have easily made one of those comments. I don't find they hurt, so much as rattle me. If people know my story, I see them realize what they have said, and give themselves a little shake.
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always.
As long as I'm living,
My baby you'll be.
